Its a little late but I took some time off and I am working on several wedding books which I love to design! Please drop me a note in the comments to let me know you visit this blog and tell your friends. I am trying to decide if I will merge my two photo blogs together (go here for my main photo blog). I will also be changing the look and updating blogs as well as the website. I will be splitting the wedding website away from my other website.

Terri and Ben got married last night at this cute little church in Plymouth Michigan. There were holiday decorations up at the church and in town which always look good in photos. We even saw Santa! These two are a real laid back couple and very comfortable in front of the camera. This always makes it easier for me to capture photographs of the real people and real moments.

OFF WITH THE FLASH, SOMETIMES

I use quite a bit of strobe when I shoot weddings, especially at receptions. Off camera, on camera, both, bounced and direct. Depending on where I wonder and what I'm trying to get. But the newspaper shooter in me still loves to turn the strobes off and shoot available light. Its usually later in the night after I have some nice strobed images in the bag. It also helps when you have low ceilings, cool DJ lights and some nice looking women dancing the cha-cha slide. Yes I am sick of that song but it always makes for some good photos on the dance floor! I shot a bunch of these and the tree here were my favotites. Nikon D300, 17-35, ISO 1600 1/3 at 2.8 for those that care. I will also shoot at 1/15th and 1/8th like this sometimes.

What a nice winter wedding. Yes it was cold but at least there was a little snow on the ground and Christmas lights at the reception to keep it festive. BTW the reception was at Addison Oaks north of Rochester Michigan. It was my first time shooting there and what a great place for a wedding especially this time of year if you want a festive/holiday themed wedding reception. I took some chance with available light last night and it paid off. Also play with some different looks with flash at the reception and that paid off as well. More photos HERE.

Ok so one more wedding nfor the year next week. I don't have any weddings to shoot in December and I'm glad. That will give me the chance to finish up all the wedding images I'm working on, finish and get started on a few books and then take some time at Christmas to relax a bit with my family. I still have opening for 2009 and remember if you have not booked me yet and book a last minute Jan, Feb or March wedding with me I'll throw in a bonus.

What a blast their wedding was. They both, along with their families, were so comfortable in front of the camera it never seemed they knew I was there which is great for my style of photography! Great party as well! There were plenty of great moments between the two of them! To bad Michigan State beat Michigan! LOL :) Also I'm jealous because they are honeymooning in Australia and then New Zealand! Are you sure you guys don't want to take me!!!!! MORE PHOTOS HERE!

Angela is one of the sweetest girls I have photographed, Kevins not such a bad guy either! LOL :) The light was real low in the church with a bunch of candles lit. They were quite spread out so a photo showing all the candles wasn't possible. A band played for a half our before the ceremony, nice touch! Some nice fall color as well. I went to Lansing Michigan on Saturday to photograph Molly and Ben's big day. It was an outdoor wedding and quite hot for late August. Bring on the cool weather of fall! Molly was pretty nervous before the wedding and really showed all her emotions in her facial expressions and body language which made for some nice images. I was able to capture a few nice tender moments between her and Ben like the one below from the ceremony. They were both real comfortable in front of the camera and it shows. If I'm shooting your wedding just be yourself and the photos will always be better. The photo above was a "set-up candid" and I really like it. I was outside the building and started photographing this scene later in the night. I looked at it on the camera and knew I had to get them down there. I don't do this very often as to not interrupt the couple having fun but I showed the image to molly and said, "all it needs is a bride and groom," and she loved the idea. Thanks guys for a great shooting experience. And hey Ben, GO BLUE! Sorry Molly! LOL! MORE PHOTOS HERE!

I didn't put this image in the gallery because her mom might get me if I did, sorry mom" but I like the feel and how casual it is before getting dressed. At least she isn't in her dress yet but I have those too. :) Also it was shot with the Nikon D300 and it is so nice to be able to shoot high ISO in available light again! I really like this camera and am looking forward to the D700. Although the D90 and Canon 5D Mark II sure look nice!

Above is not great but a nice accident shot when the flash didn't fire. I love these. They are always surprises for me.

I love catching the emotion of a bride dancing with her dad. I guess because I have a daughter.

I shot Jodie and Dave's wedding last night for a fellow photographer who was in a bind and needed help with a shooter. I didn't have a wedding to shoot so it was no problem with my schedule. I was a little nervous with not ever meeting the couple first but it was a real nice wedding and night of shooting.
Also this was the first time I ever had tears in my eyes at a wedding. It was when Dave was dancing with his 8 year old daughter and she was crying. See a photo below. I don't know if they were happy tears or sad tears but things can be very emotional for a young girl. I hate to see little girls cry. I felt for her and thought of my own daughter and how she was home probably getting ready for bed and I missed her. I often think about the day my daughter gets married and I have no idea how I will make it through that day. Having a daughter changes you and I'm glad!

I shot Christine & Ryan's wedding today. It was small and short but they were a very cute couple and it was a very old church, built in the 1800's, which made for some nice images. I never met them until today as they live on the west side of Michigan about a 3 hour drive for me. They hired me based on my website and I'm so glad they did! The posed portrait below was a light teat but I really like their look in this one. Don't worry mom, I have them smiling as well. LOL. A cool idea. Lisa's mom makes candles and the made labels with a photo I shot of Lisa and Tony a couple months ago on another Lake Michigan beach. I thought they looked nice.

This shot was a horizontal but it worked better as a vertical and I like the loos of the image.

If you live on the west side if Michigan or in Chicago I highly recommend getting married along Lake Michigan. More photos will be posted in a gallery Sunday night. It's a little after 1:00 AM and I am sitting in a hotel room checking email before bed. After shooting a High School football game for the Detroit News (see pdf of today's sports page below) I drove 2 1/2 hours across the state to Holland, Michigan. I'm shooting a beach wedding, ah well today, on Lake Michigan. I can't wait. The weather is suppose to be great and the location will be awesome. Look for photos later tonight. KISS BOOKS ROCK!!!

Wow! Wow! Wow! My 2nd KISS wedding book arrived today and it’s Awesome! This one is for a client and she is going to love this book. The cover is great, the binding looks flawless, the printing is beautiful and the book just plain looks great!

My first book was my sample book and the color was a little off. A little to warm and a little to red and too dark. But it was mostly my fault with color issues and monitor calibration.

Anyway after working on the color, having some test prints made a couple times and working with the fine people at KISS I love the results.

Yes FINE people at KISS, Kevin is just plain AWESOME!

Answering all my emails, very quickly, working on my files and helping me to get the best results possible. Everyone talks about the customer service at KISS and it is spot on! Best customer service I have had in a long, long time.

I am so happy and can’t wait to do my next book.

I shot Mary and Jeremy's wedding on Saturday. Very nice and great weather! Everyone was just themselves around me which is the best way for me to work. Makes the moments and images real. I photographed Lindsay and Kevin's big day this past weekend. What a fun and easygoing couple. Lindsay was sh chilled out, except until about 5 minutes before walking down, despite pouring rain, heat, no power at the church (it came back on about 20 minutes before the ceremony), construction. Last Friday I spend a couple hours with Lisa and Tony on the beach and sand at Warren Dunes State Park along the Lake Michigan shoreline. They live in Chicago and I can't wait for their beach wedding later this summer near Holland Michigan. You just have to love the beach!

Well not really but a storm chased us, right into the library building on the campus of Michigan State University. So really bad storms were working their way across Michigan and hit East Lansing right around 4:00 PM when we going to start shooting their e-pics, outside. So as we were walking to the area we were shooting at the wind, picked up then the rain and we ran into the building. The tornado sirens started blaring and a Doppler radar indicated tornado was in Lansing moving our way so we went to the basement of the library.

A little bit after that we went back outside and started shooting, wet, drizzle and all.

So with other people across Michigan picking up after the storm we made some real nice portraits.

I spent a couple hours with Scott and Cara today, wedding is in July, at Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan where Scott went to high school. We shot around the art museum which is a popular area for photographers. Cara was a diver and gymnast in high school and college and gave me the idea for the jumping. They were fun to work with and I think it shows in the photos. Click photos for bigger view.

I think I like the above shot in black and white even more.

Some people think it’s crazy to just ride a bike 300 miles let alone carrying cameras and photographing it along the way, but its not. I think the real superstars are the volunteers who take care of us riders for three days, because we would be riding anyway. And also the families of the wish kids, what courage and strength!
This will be my toughest WAM yet as after 10 years of racing mountain bikes I decided to stop racing and unfortunately let myself get horribly out of shape. I have a lot of work to do but I always remember it’s for the kids! Thanks for stopping by and donate as much as you can even if it’s just giving up a Starbucks for a day or two.

The Observer & Eccentric newspapers (covers metro Detroit burbs) did a story on my and shooting "Trash The Dress" portraits. It was published in their Wedding guide last Thursday. Here is the online version. GO TO STORY.

I've had a few inquiries already including a woman getting a divorce who wants to "trash the dress" for very different reasons then most of my clients. Hopefully it get the word out more and I will be posting more TTD images soon.

I shot Meg & Luke's wedding last night and Meg's son, and now Luke's son, Colin was everywhere for photos. I really enjoyed watching and photographing Meg with Colin and Luke with Colin. The wedding ceremony was quite emotional as Meg's mother had to go to the hospital with an infection and looked to miss the wedding. Meg really had to fight the emotional flood just before walking down the aisle. Then halfway through the ceremony her mom made an appearance to everyones delight. The priest made the announcement that she joined the ceremony and everyone cheered and applauded and there were quite a few tears. Her mom had to return to the hospital for treatment after a brief stay at the reception. I am so happy for you Meg! I really enjoyed spending time with Meg, Luke their families and of course Colin. Lots of love in the air in Monroe last night!

I shot Erin and Drew’s big day over the weekend on a chilly November day. The cold didn’t get in the way of a good time for them and their families. The church was under construction but still looked great. And the reception hall was decorated AWESOME. And I loved the ceiling! So many ceilings are hard to work with photographically because they are to high or to dark for bouncing light or just plain don’t look good and I like to shoot low angles of dancing when I can so this can be a problem. Not Saturday though!

Oh ya I got banned. I’m missing two photos from their day. Them signing the marriage license. The priest called Erin and her maid of honor to his office before the ceremony and as I was following he looked at me sternly and said, “Excuse me sir” as in don’t come in here. Not a big deal but I hate feeling like I missed a photo. I have always had a hard time excepting someone telling me no photos no matter if its a priest, a cop or anyone else. Access is everything in photojournalism. Still got some fantastic shots! Well Erin and Drew should be on the beach in a warm sunny place right about now and having a great time! Thanks guys, you and your families were so nice to me!!!

I photographed Mary and Jeremy tonight for their "save the date" cards they will send out for the holidays for their upcoming wedding next July. They wanted their dog Snickers, who they rescued, in the photos with them. Cool idea. So we shot a few portraits of the three of them at their house. Then we went to the parking structure in Royal Oak to try and get something different. They were on a time crunch so there wasn't much time to shoot but I like how the above photo came out. Kind of like snickers is their bodyguard. I shot the below photo real quick for fun and think I would like to shoot at this location again and work this shot some more.
I also still feel like crud (see post on my other blog) so a quick shoot tonight was good for me as well.

What a fun wedding to shoot! Wedding photos, my style anyway, turn out so much better when everyone is just themselves and real and lets me tell the story. It helps that Liz is also a newspaper photographer in NY and gets it. It was rainy and nasty out but weather always makes great photos. It was a long day and I was exhausted, still am, but had a blast and can't wait to get some more images up hopefully later tonight. Lots of work but both weddings this weekend were great! Stacey and Johns wedding was a blast, I knew it would be. I photographed her sister's wedding a ways back and met Stacey then. She is a little wild which makes great photos. They were married at the Detroit Athletic Club right downtown. Nice view of the ballpark from one of the suites. Cool old building. Great place for a wedding. Everyone had fun for sure!

While I was in the limo at this past weekends wedding photographing the bride I shot this self portrait reflection. I'm glad this beach wedding went off with no problems since its been raining ever since. So I have been in the dark basement, where my office is, editing and toning for the last 2 days. So a few weeks ago we did a b-pic photo shoot. He was surprised; a little embarrassed (with all the people and his mom in the room) but definitely liked the framed photos.

WAM 300 THIS WEEKEND

Ok everyone the Make-A-Wish Wish A Mile 300 bike tour starts Friday! I will be leaving early Thursday morning to catch a bus to Traverse City and then the ride starts Friday morning. A cool thing this year. You can see steaming live video of the start each day, the awards Saturday night and the Heroes Hurrah finish on Sunday.

"That was so much fun!" "I just don't want to get leaches on me!" "I love it!" Just a few comments from Michelle during our "Trash the Dress" photo shoot. We had a blast out in a local park and Michelle was a great subject and a good sport. We had a good mix of sun and clouds to give us some different looks. Oh course as soon as we would set up for a cloud shot the sun would come out and then a cloud would come back which slowed things down a bit. We shot for a little over 2 hours. So how long of a shower did you take after Michelle? :)
I have a few more "trashings" lined up. Let me know when you want to be next!

What a cool idea. I know I've always wanted to do photos of a bride with her dress in the mud, beach, pool, rain, whatever. I just never really pursued the idea. I'm going to now before the trend gets any bigger! So if any of my former brides want to do a cool photo shoot like this just let me know. I don't have any fees in mind yet so first one to contact me will be at no charge. I might include it in my packages and also have a fee for brides whose weddings I didn't shoot.
Also for any of my upcoming brides we could do this type of photoshoot after your wedding instead of the engagement photos. Or any brides reading this. Just do it. It looks like fun and you will have some very cool photos. Why trash the dress? Read Here.

I saw this on Greg Gibson's BLOG talking about watching contest judging at the WPPI - (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International) conference.

"One thing that became clear to me while looking at some of the prints is that many wedding photographers and even a few of the judges, still don’t have a clear idea of what wedding photojournalism is all about. Photojournalism is about story-telling and moments. It’s less about perfection. By that, I mean that photojournalism should be about capturing great story-telling moments that reveal something about the subject. It’s less about perfect exposure, composition and sharpness. I saw a few prints that I thought were really nice moments get graded down because a judge became distracted by some minor technical detail. Cliff did a nice job of trying to keep everyone reminded that the PJ category should, perhaps, be judged on different criteria than some of the other categories." - Greg Gibson

This is what I strive for in my wedding photojournalism.

BTW, Greg is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winning photographer now specializing in documentary wedding and portrait photography.

Then read this story about Maddie, who died last year from cancer, but was able to go to Disney World first because of Make-A-Wish. If the photo of her with Cinderella does not make you want to kick in a few bucks I don't know what will.

What is a Heart Gallery?

There are over 300 children in Michigan currently waiting to be adopted through the foster care system. Most of these children are African American, over the age of 8, or need to be adopted along with other brothers and sisters.

The Heart Gallery is a photographic exhibit of children in the foster care system who are waiting for a permanent family of their own through adoption. The Heart Gallery is used to increase awareness about adoption and to recruit families for these children. The exhibit reaches out to prospective adoptive parents and the community providing a beautiful way to learn about foster care and adoption.

The Michigan Heart Gallery is a traveling photographic exhibit of Michigan children who are waiting to be adopted. The exhibit also features photographs of families who have adopted children from the foster care system. The main exhibit opened in November of 2005 is traveling throughout Michigan.

I am still surprised at the number of photographers, photojournalist included, which limit coverage time in hours. The way I work is on average I meet up with the bride 2-3 hours before the wedding and I am one of the last people to leave. I never say, oh it’s been 8 hours or 10 hours I’m done. As long as the party keeps going, I keep going. Basically when the bride and groom leave, that is when I leave. Although I have followed a few couples to an after parties. -Bryan
